Shower Enclosure Replacement Permit Requirements

This permit will allow you to repair or replace your shower enclosure, shower pan, and shower fixture. It is a combination permit that includes a building and plumbing permit. The following are the minimum requirements that must be met:
  • The water piping materials shall be copper, ductile iron, galvanized steel or PEX.
  • Plumbing fixtures may be changed, but the new shower control valve must be the pressure balanced or the thermostatic mixing valve type.
  • If you have any questions regarding allowable materials, construction methods or installation requirements for your project contact the Building Inspection Division.
  • Shower pan to be minimum 1,024 square inches which shall facilitate the minimum diameter of a 30" circle.
The Shower Enclosure Permit is NOT available if you are:
  • Replacing or repairing the shower enclosure as part of a termite inspection repair.
  • Adding a new shower in a different location.
Inspections
Typical inspections are:
  • Shower pan test
  • Wall board screw/nail
  • Shower bath
  • Final
  • The number of inspections required depends on the type of underlayment used in the shower enclosure. Additional inspection may be needed based on extent of the project. The initial inspection can be scheduled with the online permits process or directly with the Building Inspection Division at (650) 903-6313.
